This torture was also a punishment for minor misdeeds such as forgetting to bow to a passing guard. Triangular sections of wood were nailed to a tea chest or similar obJect. The victim was then forced onto the timbers with his feet just overhanging the edge of the chest. His knees and shinbones would be resting on the sham timbers. A boulder of considerable weight would be placed into his cradled arms, increasing the downward weight onto the knees and shinbones. A period of three to four hours was usually the limit of endurance, after which the Japs ailowed the victim to be lifted off the timbers. Damage to kneecaps was the usual longterm result.
