Using a Pencil
Using the tip of the pencil on the paper enables fine lines and detail to be drawn with control, but to accomplish a broad arc drawn in one unbroken sweep pivot the hand from the elbow allowing greater freedom of movement. Tone can be applied quickly by cross hatching in short strokes.
